1. Keep people and pets out of the affected area
Sewage backup water is classified as "black water" — grossly contaminated water that can carry bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. The first and most important step is keeping household members and pets away from the affected area entirely, not attempting to walk through it or clean it up barehanded.
2. Stop using water and plumbing fixtures
If the backup is coming from a drain or toilet, stop running water anywhere in the house until the source is understood. Continuing to use sinks, showers, or toilets can add more water to a system that's already backing up and make the spread worse.
3. Shut off electricity to the affected area if it's safe to do so
If the water has reached outlets, appliances, or electrical panels and you can reach your breaker panel without stepping through the water, shut off power to that area. If you can't reach it safely, leave it to a professional rather than risking contact with contaminated water near live electrical.
4. Ventilate if possible

6. Document what you can see, from a safe distance
